I am celebrating Liberation Season. Last night we raised our Juneteenth Tree, and this morning I added decorations. In the days ahead, my kids will hang ornaments honoring people martyred for liberation. We’ll watch documentaries about America’s struggle to ensure freedom for ALL people, including the moments when the nation wrestles with itself.
We will celebrate from now through July 4th because this country is ours to honor. My ancestors fought to become part of this country and to help it reach independence. There are many stories of Black people who contributed to the Revolutionary War. My enslaved ancestors built this country too, built with their bare hands and often under the whip and heart ache of being separated from home and family. To honor July 4th without acknowledging the truth would be to dishonor my ancestors.
Two years ago, I gave a speech—less than five minutes—sharing my views on Juneteenth. I pray it inspires everyone to join me in celebrating Liberation Season.
