Books

Dr. Prather’s writing reflects her commitment to helping educators, students, and families see the connections between the Christian faith, the classical tradition, and the stories of humanity. Her first book, Living in the Constellation of the Canon, is a self-published adaptation of her dissertation. In it, she shares her journey of engaging African American students with the Great Books through Socratic dialogue. She explores the history of classical education within the African American community and invites readers to bring the African American story into conversation with the classical tradition.

She is the co-author of The Black Intellectual Tradition (with Dr. Angel Adams-Parham), which traces the historical and philosophical development of the Black Intellectual Tradition in America from 1619 to the present. The book demonstrates how African American thinkers have long engaged the enduring questions of truth, justice, beauty, and human flourishing.

Her forthcoming book, Human Tapestries: Weaving Africana Stories with Classics, continues this work by demonstrating how Africana history, literature, and intellectual thought enrich conversations with the classical tradition. Rather than treating these stories as separate from the classics, the book weaves them together, revealing a richer and more complete understanding of the human experience.

In The Koinonia Theory (forthcoming 2027), Dr. Prather introduces the theological framework behind Koinonia Education and the vision of Christian Schools of Belonging. Grounded in the life of the early Church, the book provides Christian school leaders with a biblical framework for cultivating communities where Christ is at the center and diverse human stories are welcomed into Christian fellowship, learning, and community.

Her book Wisdom Begins in Wonder, is a short text in the style of Socratic dialogue that introduces readers to the foundations of classical education. Through conversation and thoughtful questioning, the book explores why classical education belongs to all people and invites readers to rediscover the joy of learning through wonder, dialogue, and the pursuit of wisdom.

In addition to her books, Dr. Prather contributed a chapter to Learning the Good Life edited by Jessica Hooten Wilson, a collection of essays that brings diverse voices into conversation with the Western Canon, demonstrating how the classical tradition is enriched through multiple cultural perspectives.
